Paula Radcliffe remains hopeful of defending her New York Marathon title despite pulling out of this weekend's World Half Marathon Championships.
Radcliffe, 35, is suffering from tonsillitis and is completing a course of antibiotics that mean she is unable to compete in Birmingham on Sunday.
She said: "I'm devastated not to be able to compete in Birmingham.
"I hope I'll be fine [for New York]. I don't know what it will do to me mentally if I lose another race."
The withdrawal from the world half marathon follows Radcliffe's recent failure to compete in the World Athletics Championships because of injury.
Zersenay Tadese surged clear after 10km to clinch a third successive World Half Marathon title in Birmingham.
The Eritrean lowered the championship record he shared with Shem Kororia by a massive 21 seconds to finish in 59 minutes and 35 seconds.
Tadese was followed home by Kenyan Bernard Kipyego, with Andrew Lemoncello the first Briton home in 26th.
Pre-race favourite Mary Keitany easily claimed the women's title, the Kenyan leading from start to finish.
